Why you need to work with a consultant:

As you already know, I have experience working in-house and agency-side. Not only that, under WEBOSIS, I’ve consulted for many companies as well as agencies that employ their own in-house SEO staff. Thus, I have a very good idea of the ins-and-outs of the three different industry roles. While they all can serve their purposes, working with an experienced consultant like me is always a plus – even if you’re already working with one. Here’s why:

In-house vs agency vs consultant:

If you can afford to hire an experienced in-house SEO employee or team, that is great. Being able to oversee employees who become intimately aware of your business and are able to devote 100% of their working hours to it is probably the main advantage of hiring in-house.

However, you must make sure to include time and resources for your employees to cultivate their expertise. If you’re not providing them with opportunities for continued education, and they’re not working on their own projects or doing client work on the side, then their knowledge base will most likely be very narrow. Thus, their perspective will be restricted, the scope of their production will be limited, and your results will be suboptimal.

In an ideal scenario, hiring consultants and agencies periodically (and as needed, or even indefinitely) to complement your own staff would provide for checks and balances, and give you the best of all worlds.

Whether you’re able to employ your own in-house SEO staff or not, it can be beneficial to hire an agency to fill in the gaps. The main advantage of agencies is probably the extent of their knowledge and resources. Where in-house staff can lose sight of the overall search landscape, an agency can offer the personnel and experience needed to provide the means and perspective that is essential for a complete effort.

With that said, agencies can also have many drawbacks. As you know, I’ve been both employed and contracted by agencies. I’ve also managed agency relationships as an in-house employee. Across all of those experiences, I haven’t had any praiseworthy encounters with any agencies. While I may hold a higher standard than most, if there are any admirable agencies out there, they seem to be quite difficult to find.

The main problem I run into with agencies is that they are generally less invested in your business. Their bottom line isn’t your bottom line. This aspect leads to misconceived strategies and more focus on the illusion of value – like selling irrelevant metrics, presenting a facade of experience, or passing off cookie-cutter strategies as optimal solutions.

As with agencies, whether you’re able to employ your own in-house SEO staff or not, it would be beneficial to hire an experienced consultant like me to fill in the gaps. Likewise, consultants also offer the benefits of knowledge and experience.

The main benefit of hiring an experienced consultant like me is the ability to have relational transparency. You get to know exactly who you’re working with, as opposed to a “team” at an agency where there tends to  be frequent turnover, passing down of tasks from senior to junior team members, or outsourcing of tasks.

The reason I keep reiterating the hiring of “an experienced consultant like me” is because consultants can also range widely in their knowledge, experience, and strategies. Many of the same drawbacks of agencies can translate to consultants as well.

This is why I’m providing so much detail about my history and methodology. I want to give you all the information you need about me up front so that you can make the most educated decision you can.

Why I choose to be a consultant:

As you can see, there are pros and cons to all three industry roles. However, there is a reason I have remained a consultant since 2007 and haven’t accepted any offers to go back in-house or agency-side:

My skills are best suited in a consultancy role where I can retain the autonomy to utilize my strengths as I see fit, so that I can apply the most efficient means to return the best possible results for my clients.

Not to mention, a major reason I haven’t expanded into my own agency (even though I’m continually approached to do so) is because I don’t want to have to deal with the business side of things.

This is where I believe most agencies fail – the founder tries to leverage their expertise into building a business when they don’t know how to manage one.

I’m actually quite confident in my ability to provide more general business advice from my experience with hundreds of businesses. However, I’m not inspired by the additional responsibilities of handling my own business, so I don’t care to delve into it for myself.

I’d rather enjoy what I do. Not to mention, focusing my efforts on the skills that I love to apply makes for the best setting to produce the most optimal results.

Are stupid!

Why?

I was thinking about how I should present some case studies of my past work to showcase my abilities. That’s what you’re supposed to do to provide social proof after all, isn’t it?Well, you should know by now that I don’t adhere to conventions. Especially when they’re stupid.

When I thought about how I wanted to lay out these validations, it didn’t take very long for me to begin dreading all the work that would go into the task. I’d have to ask for permission, collect data, and develop the content and design. And then, of course, I would have to scrutinize the result.

Then, I realized how stupid the whole scheme is. Before I could even proceed with all of those processes, there was one essential thing I had to do first:

Pick which clients to flaunt.

Do you see how misleading that can be? Anyone can pick and choose their best work to show off, but that won’t accurately reflect one’s overall abilities.

Of course, I’m not going to promote shoddy work that I’ve done (not that I can recall doing anything less than satisfactory for a client). With that said, I can admit to working on projects where the relationship didn’t harmonize well, which resulted in efforts that weren’t as optimal as they could’ve been.

I also don’t want my clients to expect the same results as reflected in cherry-picked examples. This tends to propagate impractical expectations. The work I’ve done in the past doesn’t necessarily predict the work I will do for you.

I can understand how decision-makers have gotten roped into this charade. I just don’t care to participate. It’s quite easy to find others to play along with, if this is what you’re looking for.

When it comes to online marketing, the process is multifactorial, and every project is different. More reliable factors of success include my skill set, methodology, and motivation.

Experiential diversity.

While there can be some initial advantages, I don’t believe it’s a necessity to possess experience in a specific industry in order to provide valuable marketing advice for it. In fact, there is evidence across many fields that point to experiential diversity as the number one factor in determining success.

For example, the number one predictor for becoming an elite athlete is early participation in multiple sports.1 In entrepreneurship, a wider range of skills and knowledge in different industries is positively related to performance.2

Also, did I mention I’m a quick study?

Nonetheless, while I don’t limit myself to specific industries, I do have greater experience in the following markets:

How I work:

T

True discovery.

While I possess a wide range of experience with many different types of companies, I don’t know all about your business… yet. However, I have the power of perspective and an open mind. Sure, I have biases and tendencies, but I am keenly aware of them. Thus, I’m not tied to certain dogmas or locked into specific standards. My aim is to design the right solution specifically for you.

Accelerated proficiency.

I may not be the smartest or most knowledgeable about a particular topic, but I am highly intelligent and extremely resourceful. If there is something I don’t know enough about, I can get up to speed very quickly. As you know, I’ve spent most of my life studying and researching myriad subjects. This practice has granted me an innate ability to parse and synthesize information expeditiously.

The big picture.

My work may blow your mind, or it may confirm what you already speculated. I don’t pretend to have any magic bullets or secrets. What sets me apart is my breadth of experience, extensive knowledge base, and my capacity to observe situations on different levels. These traits empower me with a broad perspective to develop strategies of least resistance toward total optimization.

Flow state work mode.

As you know, I am a MOST Functional Integrator. To reiterate, MOST Functional Integration is what I’m calling a philosophical theory that encompasses the complex systems of progressing toward ideal outcomes in any situation, in a practical and efficient manner.

So, not only do I optimize websites, I inherently optimize everything in my life.

When I optimize websites for clients, I also optimize myself so that I can optimize their websites optimally.

Is that enough optimization for you?

To be more clear, I implement daily routines that I developed for myself in order for me to easily enter a flow state, which allows for me to utilize my time as efficiently as possible.

You may have experienced this energetic feeling of being “in the zone” yourself. It’s a state of peak performance where you’re fully absorbed in the task at hand. Everything else, including your sense of time and space, floats out of mind. The absence of distractions allows you to bask in the glory of the moment, as all of your other perceived needs become imperceptible.

There are varying levels of flow, and you can experience this immersion in various types of activities

How I get into my flow state work mode...
My daily routines have become quite intricate. There are many practices I implement in order to perform at a peak level on a regular basis.
